About

Mission

Understanding the urgent and time-sensitive nature of the climate crisis, UCSC’s Climate Faculty and Staff Network seeks to promote climate-related campus education; publicize UCSC’s climate-related teaching, research, and events; and advocate for rapid action to mitigate climate change on our campus and in the world more broadly.

Who Are We?

Climate Action Now (CAN) at UC Santa Cruz is a faculty/staff-led initiative dedicated to climate justice, sustainability, and environmental education. Our mission is to empower communities and drive solutions to the urgent challenges of climate change. Through courses, events, and collaborations across the UC system and beyond, we invite students, faculty, and community members to learn, take action, and create lasting impact.

Demand Action

Engage with the UCSC Climate & Sustainability Task Force and Academic Senate Committees, pushing for immediate action. Leverage UCSC’s influence to drive change within the UC system and beyond.

Teach Climate

Introduce a new GE requirement addressing climate change and an annual climate lecture for first year students. Also, increase support for climate-aligned teaching, research and service across disciplines.

Advance Decarbonization

Collaborate with UCSC administration and sustainability groups to push for immediate decarbonization efforts, aiming to achieve full campus decarbonization by 2030 and set an example for other institutions.

Zero Emission Alternatives

Expand zero and low-emission transportation at UCSC. Protect and develop cycling/pedestrian lanes and bike infrastructure with the city of Santa Cruz.

Promote Awareness

Organize faculty salons to promote discussion of climate-related topics and build awareness of UCSC’s climate leadership.

Shape The Future

Prepare the state, nation, and world to face major changes in the economy and society posed by climate change, technology, and resources.
