Event Description
Join the Climate Justice Universities Union’s North American branch for the first in a new monthly Flash Talk series featuring short presentations by expert-activists. This session, “How to engage in critical and productive conversation about AI: Tips for teaching, scholarship, service and beyond,” will explore how and why academic communities need to resist colonial AI as it unfolds globally and locally.
Mary Finley-Brook, PhD, of the University of Richmond, will discuss the risks of normalizing AI adoption and use, with examples relevant to classroom teaching, scholarship, campus governance, and community engagement.
About the Speaker
Mary Finley-Brook has taught Geography, Environmental Studies, Sustainability, and Global Studies for two decades. She advocates for shared higher education governance and is concerned about administrators adopting unproven AI without adequate faculty and staff involvement. She also serves on the steering committee of Data Center Defiance, a community-based regional coalition.
Series Note
CJUU’s North American branch hosts Zoom meetings on the third Friday of each month from 12–1 PM Eastern / 9–10 AM Pacific. Upcoming Flash Talks will focus on climate-centered faculty learning communities in July and climate general education in August.
